  • Visual Storytelling in the Classroom with AI Image Generators

Stage: Preparatory and Middle · Language: English · Format: Guide with prompts

Today’s AI image generators (for example, the image tools in ChatGPT, Gemini and Canva) can turn a short description into a clear illustration. One of the most engaging classroom uses is the comic strip: describe each panel, and the tool draws it.

Use these tools yourself to prepare materials, or with students only if the tool’s age rules and your school’s policy allow it. Never upload photos of children.

    1. Digital storytelling

Students write a short story, break it into scenes, and turn it into a comic. It builds narrative skills and visual literacy.

Create a three-panel comic in a soft watercolour style: a girl in a village finds a glowing old book in a trunk; she opens it and colourful light swirls out; she is now standing in a forest wearing a traveller’s cloak. No text.

    2. Language learning

Teach idioms, vocabulary and sentence patterns in context — great for reading comprehension and writing practice.

Make a four-panel comic that explains the Hindi idiom “नाच न जाने आँगन टेढ़ा” for Class 6 students. Simple cartoon style, Indian school setting, short speech bubbles in Hindi.

    3. Writing prompts

Give students a wordless comic and ask them to write the dialogue or what happens next.

Two-panel comic, no text: a curious robot in a school library reads a book titled “How to Be Human”; a student with a backpack walks up and looks surprised. Leave empty caption boxes under each panel.

    4. Classroom routines and posters

Turn expectations into friendly visual reminders — far more effective than plain text on a wall.

Three-panel classroom poster titled “How to Line Up Quietly”: children rushing when the bell rings; the teacher reminding them calmly; children standing in a neat, smiling line. Bright, simple cartoon style, Indian school uniforms.

    5. Social-emotional learning

Help students talk about empathy, inclusion and kindness through short illustrated stories.

Four-panel comic: a boy named Arjun sits alone on a bench during recess; two classmates notice; one asks, “Want to play with us, Arjun?”; Arjun joins the game, smiling.

    Check before you print

    • Look closely at hands, faces and text — AI images often contain errors.
    • Make sure characters reflect your students’ diversity respectfully.
    • Check spellings in any text the tool adds, especially in Hindi and other Indian languages.
    • Add a small note that the image was created with AI.
