ChatGPT Study Mode: A Teacher’s Guide

Stage: Middle and Secondary · Language: English · Format: Guide

Study mode is a learning experience inside ChatGPT. Instead of handing over an answer, it asks questions to understand the learner’s goal and level, then works through the problem step by step with them. In short: ordinary ChatGPT is like a library; Study mode is like a tutor in that library.

Who can use it

According to OpenAI’s help centre (checked October 2026), Study mode is available on all ChatGPT plans worldwide, on web, iOS and Android, and works with every model available to you. It is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects. Features change, so check the official Study mode FAQ.

How to turn it on

  • Web: type @study in the message box, or click +, search for “study” and select Study. You can also open chatgpt.com/studymode.
  • iOS: tap + and choose Study (search the menu if you do not see it).
  • Android: tap +, search for Study and select it.

Why it helps learning

  • Guided thinking: Socratic questions lead students to the answer instead of giving it away.
  • Clear progression: topics are broken into small steps, from basics to harder ideas.
  • Understanding checks: open-ended questions and feedback show whether the idea has really landed.
  • Works with your material: students can upload notes or a chapter and study from it.

Classroom-friendly uses

  • Explaining a difficult topic step by step
  • Practising for a test with questions and hints
  • Revising class notes as questions and answers
  • Solving maths problems one step at a time
  • Making flashcards and quick quizzes
  • Breaking a long chapter into manageable parts
  • Rephrasing a confusing textbook paragraph
  • Rehearsing answers for a presentation or viva
  • Working through a case study
  • Practising short answers with feedback

Example: solving step by step

Student: Help me solve 2x + 5 = 15.
Study mode: What could you do first to get x on its own?
Student: Subtract 5 from both sides.
Study mode: Right — that gives 2x = 10. What next?
Student: Divide by 2.
Study mode: Correct, x = 5.

Limits to remember

  • It can still make mistakes — students should double-check answers.
  • It needs a logged-in ChatGPT account; check age requirements and your school’s policy before students use it.
  • Uploading notes or files raises privacy questions — never upload anything with personal details.
  • Results depend on the quality of the prompt and material.
  • It is a companion, not a replacement for teachers or textbooks.
